Wegovy® is FDA approved for weight loss and contains the active ingredient Semaglutide. Wegovy® is part of a class of medications called GLP-1 agonists. GLP-1, or Glucagon-like-peptide-1 is a hormone naturally occurring in the body that is responsible for regulating blood sugar, appetite, and digestion.

Both Wegovy® and Ozempic® share the same active ingredient, Semaglutide. While these medication names are commonly used interchangeably, Ozempic® is used to treat Type 2 Diabetes.

Wegovy® works by mimicking natural GLP-1 hormone production, which helps slow digestion, reduce appetite, increase satiety and optimize blood sugar levels.

Wegovy® may be covered by insurance. Individual insurance plans and coverage vary.

Insurance may require a Prior Authorization prior to approving Wegovy® coverage. This may include meeting specific criteria: a BMI (body mass index) greater than 27, history of cardiovascular associated risk factors (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type 2 Diabetes, cardiovascular disease and/or sleep apnea) and history of previous weight loss medication use.
